About spinning

Spinning is a process where fibers of limited length are twisted together into a thread or yarn of unlimited length. The spinning process begins with the fibers being loosened and cleaned by carding. Spinning on a spinning wheel emerged in the 16th century, replacing spinning with a drop spindle, which was more time-consuming.

About the course

The course is suitable for beginners and those who may have spun a little before but want to continue practicing with guidance.

During the course, you will learn to spin your own yarn. It is both fun and sustainable.

We will learn about the spinning wheel, how it works, and how to care for it. We will learn to card wool and then spin it into yarn on the spinning wheel. For those who haven't spun before, it can take time to become skilled at spinning. But you will learn enough to be able to practice further on your own.

During the course, participants will learn about different types of wool and other fibers. Those who wish can also try spinning long-fibred wool (guard hairs from Old Norwegian short-tailed landrace sheep and similar).

No prior knowledge is required; the most important thing is motivation and patience. Everything we will do is time-consuming.

Materials and equipment

The instructors will provide wool for practice. Those who wish can purchase the yarn they manage to spin during the course.

If you have your own spinning wheel and want to practice on it, you are welcome to bring it. However, there are enough spinning wheels available for loan. Bring an apron to use when carding and spinning. (The wool is dirty, and there will be some debris).

The course lasts 10 hours over 3 sessions.

About the instructors
